In memory of Ray Havert, founder South County Outreach

In 1989, businessman Ray Havert, recognized a significant need among the working poor in affluent South Orange County. It was very clear to him that there were a growing number of low income individuals and families struggling to make ends meet. Though he was 70 and recently retired he called upon friends, service clubs, faith communities and local businesses to help. Together, the people he brought together began to address the issue and to provide assistance to those facing hunger and homelessness. Born from that initial work was a non-profit organization, “Saddleback Community Outreach” (SCO). Over the years SCO and the services it provides has grown to serve as many as 10,000 families in South Orange County annually. In 2006 the agency’s name was changed to “ South County Outreach” to better reflect the large regional area it now serves.

As SCO’s founder, Ray always said that he was “doing God’s work.” In the early morning hours on April 30, with his loving wife Gerry by his bedside, Ray retired from that work here on earth but his vision continues. In addition to the many served during his lifetime, pantry groceries and other assistance were provided to over 45 families on the first day following his passing. That work will continue and grow!

To ensure the legacy continues the “SCO Ray Havert Foundation of Hope” is being established in his name for the continuation of the mission so dear to his heart. Contributions to this special designated fund are encouraged over and above those already given to sustain daily operations. The dollars given will be used in honor of Ray’s vision to benefit the hungry and the homeless and to support services that help people help themselves.
